UNUSUAL CHINESE VASE

A large and unusual Xianfeng Chinese vase, baluster form with collared neck and everted lip, applied dragons around the shoulder, decorative "foo dog" handles on the neck, and a famille rose motif of figures in martial and other official garb. The scenes likely are based on the Chinese literary classic "Romance of the Three Kingdoms." with later late 19th century over painting or "clobbering" 24 inches high

Augustus Charles Hobart

HOBART, Augustus Charles (HOBART PASHA), Turkish naval officer, born in Waltham-on-the-Welds, Leicestershire, England, 1 April, 1822; died in Milan, 19 June, 1886. He was the third son of the Earl of Buckinghamshire. He entered the British navy in 1836, during the Crimean war commanded the " Driver" in the Baltic, and was commended for his gallantry at the capture of Bomarsund and the attack on Abo. After the war he retired on half-pay, and during the civil war in the United States was in command of a blockade-runner, the "Don," which cruised along the coast of North Carolina, and endeavored to keep up maritime communication with the southern states. He was, perhaps, the most daring and successful of the English blockade-runners. In 1867 he offered his services to the sultan, who gave him command of the fleet operating against Crete. For this his name was stricken from the British naval list, but, at the instance of Lord Derby, he was, in 1874, restored to his former rank of captain on the retired list.When the war between Russia and Turkey began, in 1877, Admiral Hobart was placed in command of the Turkish fleet in the Black sea, and formally withdrew from the British service. On 8 January, 1881, the sultan raised him to the rank of "Mushir," and Marshal of the Empire, an honor never before conferred on a Christian. He wrote "Sketches from My Life" (New York, 1887).

"my research indicates that it is related to the Canterbury Grandstand 1863 medal we believed it belonged originally to Robert Chapman. My notes for him are:

Robert Chapman, the first owner of Springbank Station (October 1851). He was a significant breeder of merino sheep and was a judge at the first Canterbury A & P Show in 1859 at Shepherd's Bush. He also judged cattle at the first Canterbury A & P Show in Christchurch, after the founding of a permanent Association - this was in 1863. The showground encompassed 14 acres, part of which is now Sydenham Park. I believe that medal could have been given to Chapman as a token of his judging activities at that first A & P Show, or as one of the early members of the Association, to allow admission to the members' grandstand. I speculate that the cup (which dates from about the same period or slightly later) might come from the same source "

Lawrie trained at Grays in Aberdeen and in 1941 joined the film industry in London as a cameraman. It was at this time, that he first sold a picture - to Dylan Thomas for £5. Later in the 1940's he was exhibiting at Wolf Mankowitz' Little Gallery in London. Following a period in Africa, he followed the advice of the Scottish colourist and old friend, J. D. Ferguson, and went off to live in France (at St Paul de Vence) - for 9 years, returning to Edinburgh in 1960. ART

Colour Sergeant, NZ Medal
Colour Sergeant Warren, 65th Regiment of Foot, arrived in
New Zealand in 1846 from Sydney. He was among the 140-man
regiment that arrived in Wellington aboard the barque Levant in
response to a request by Governor Grey for reinforcements.
They were stationed at Paremata Redoubt and took part in the
action at Horokiwi in August. Later, they garrisoned the Hutt forts
and stockades and occupied the Mount Cook Barracks in Buckle
Street in 1847.
Warren saw service in Wellington, New Plymouth, Bay of Islands,
Napier and the Waikato during the regiment’s 20-year stay in
New Zealand.

This hiapo is made from the bark of the paper mulberry tree. It has been decorated with hand-drawn motifs. In the 1880s, many hiapo were produced with a new style of fine freehand decoration. Comprising intricate line work and detailed motifs based on various species of plants, a distinctly Niuean iconography developed. Some scholars believe that many hiapo from this period were made by a single small community on Niue.

LARGE MANAIA CARVING

Large manaia carving, (possibly cut from a pou pou) exhibiting unusual surface decoration known as “Taratara o Kai” or “Taratara a Kai” which means “prickly” or “barbed”, and is presumably applied to this pattern from the variant form consisting of a row of pointed triangles. Taratara a kai consists of parallel strips of raised zigzag notching, separated by a ridge or, sometimes, by a plain space. The pattern is practically confined to the Arawa and Matatua tribes of Rotorua and the Bay of Plenty and the Ngati Maru of the Thames area. In these areas the pattern is used on pataka (storehouses) and only rarely on other buildings. It is also present on a palisade post from a pa near Wairoa, Hawke's Bay.

A very early New Zealand made Chiffoneer in the Regency style, made from solid Totara, ca 1840 , this is an exciting find as I have not seen an example this early made in New Zealand.

Charles MacIver Grierson RI (1864-1939)

Born in Queenstown Co. Cork, Grierson studied at the
Crawford School of Art and later at the Westminster School in London. Here in 1892, he became a member of the RI and exhibited over 80 works with them over the following years. In the late 1890s Grierson returned to Ireland, meeting his future wife in Co. Sligo. His works are thus found in several private collections around Sligo as well as in the Art Gallery of South Australia, Adelaide. In his own lifetime they were also shown at the RA, the RHA, Liverpool's Walker Art Gallery, the Society of Artists in Birmingham and the Abbey Gallery, London.

19th century English painting with . The painting depicts a wonderful picture of the and the Britannia Bridge in Wales. It is constructed with natural and dyed pieces of straw which has been applied to a watercolor painting. It is identified on the base with an inscription. The framed piece measures 27 x 22.5 inches. There is some loss to some of the straw work and a couple spots of staining. Still a wonderful early piece of English folk art. SOLD
